It is my absolute pleasure to get to share with you about my good friend, Jocelyn Green and her FANTASTIC Civil War series, Heroines Behind the Lines. I recently read the first book in her series, Wedded to War and absolutely loved it.
ย Rarely am I swept away in a novel as I was by Wedded to War. A fresh voice in Christian fiction, Jocelyn Green captures the heartache and hope of war in this novel that is filled with incredible historic detail about those who worked on the front lines of the Civil War–the soldiers who gave so much to defend their country and the nurses who sacrificed all to care for them. Laced with heart-tugging romance and a hint of mystery, the story of how Charlotte Waverly traded in her hoop skirts for a nursing uniform, the scent of rosewater in her hair for tangles and wisps as she ladled beef tea into a dying soldiers mouth, and her soft hands for the hands of someone who worked without sleep to care for the men who have no one else to care for them, will bring tears to your eyes, a smile to your face and quite possibly, will have you walk away a different person than you were when you began.
Award-winning author Jocelyn Green inspires faith and courage in her readers through both fiction and nonfiction. A former military wife herself, she offers encouragement and hope to military wives worldwide through her Faith Deployed ministry. Her novels, inspired by real heroines on Americaโs home front, are marked by their historical integrity and gritty inspiration.
I’ve put together a bundle of goodies inspired by the story to give away to one commenter! One of the little luxuries the heroine of Wedded to War enjoys when she can is a cup of tea so included here is a small sugar bowl, little spoon and a house-shaped tea “ball”ย that reminded me of Charlotte’s home, plus some white rose tea, a bar of cranberry soap, a little handkerchief and a star shaped wall hook.
All you have to do to enter is leave a comment below!
It can be any comment, or simply to say hello, but if you’d like, you can pop in and peek insideย Jocelyn’s website.ย You don’t even have to knock…just walk right in. ๐ What is something you learned about Jocelyn or her books while you were there?
For an extra entry: tweet or share about the giveaway on Facebook or any other place and you can have an extra entry! Just mention it in the comments below. ๐
A winner will be drawn on Friday, May 3rd and contacted via email
And lastly, I am so excited about her upcoming novel which hits bookshelves in May! Widow of Gettysburg is the second book in the series and I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy! Right now, you can get it for your Kindle or Nook, absolutely free. Happy reading and thank you for being here!

Joanne! I am so touched that Wedded to War burrowed its way into your heart, and by your generosity with this lovely give-away here! Thank you so much! Some lucky commenter is going to be extremely happy! ๐
Jocelyn, It’s a great book. I’m so happy I found you! (huge thanks to Jan) ๐ Your books are great reads and I’m so eager to read #2!
A beautiful tribute to the strong woman of that era, their faith and courage are qualities we should all strive to achieve.
What sweet words, Mona. I absolutely agree. The lessons abound in serving other.
Mona, so good to see you here. Thank you for entering! Will I see you at the Cedar Falls Christian Writers Workshop in June? ๐
so excited about reading her stories! I’m a fan of the Civil War and spent a lot of time in Gettysburg! I’m also excited about her 5 love languages for Military! I’m military spouse of 12 years and so excited to read! God Bless you Joanne for the wonderful give away…the items you have put together are beautiful and very Civil War time period like!
(sorry about the above. I submitted to early. :()
Heather,
Good morning! It’s so fun to meet more of Jocelyn’s readers and to learn a little more about you. Your family’s service to our country is a blessing, thank you! I’m so glad you are here for the giveaway!
P.s. not to worry…I have the power of deletion ๐
Hi Heather, glad to see you’re in the running for this beautiful give-away! I’m excited about The 5 Love Languages Military Edition, too. Just four months to go!! ๐
I’ve never read any of your books, but I’m always looking for new authors to enjoy. Thanks for this opportunity!
Hi, Ann! Welcome and I’m so glad you’re here for the giveaway.
Hi Ann, it’s nice to meet you! If you are interested in the Heroines Behind the Lines series, this is a good time to dive in since Widow of Gettysburg is free as an ebook right now! Start with Wedded, first, though, because the main character does make an appearance in Widow and you’ll want to know her story already. ๐ Thanks for coming by!
I can’t wait to read both Jocelyn’s and Joanne’s newest releases! Congratulations to both of you for the Christy Award nominations! I am not surprised. Both were one of my favorites for 2012.
Thank you Amy! That means so much that you’re looking forward to the books. We were so excited about the nominations! Thank you! ๐
Amy, you are so sweet. You may not be surprised that Joanne and I are Christy Award finalists, but both of us sure were! ๐ Thanks for your enthusiasm!
I shared. ๐

Thank you! I’ll enter you twice! ๐
“Gone With The Wind” you have competition and it’s “Wedded To War” <3 God Bless you for such a beautiful giveaway, what an honor to win such a treasure of history! P.S. I have also shared this giveaway page on Facebook ๐
Grace ~ What fun! I know Jocelyn will be so glad to know that!! I’m so glad you are here for the giveaway. Thanks for joining us and a double thanks for sharing! I’ll be sure to enter you twice!
Wow, Grace, I’m quite sure you’re the first person to make such a comparison! Good heavens, thank you! And thanks for sharing this post! ๐
I LOVE Jocelyn’s books and I LOVED “Be Still My Soul”! I’ll definitely share this on Facebook!
Darci ~ So glad to know that you enjoyed Be Still My Soul and I just know Jocelyn will be equally as glad by the compliment. Thanks for sharing! An extra entry for you! ๐
Thanks Darci! I’m so glad you LOVED Be Still My Soul! In my humble opinion, Joanne’s second book, Though My Heart Is Torn, should be next on your ever-growing to-read list. I found it to be even more enthralling than her first. You can even postpone reading Widow, because I’m pretty sure once you start TMHIT you will devour it in a matter of days. It took me all of three sittings.
I read Wedded to war and have the next one ordered to come tomorrow on my Kindle. Enjoy Jocelyn’s writing and her detailed research really shows in her stories. Brave women that helped fight the Civil War on their own front with all the sadness, challenges and having to “make do” is so inspirational!
Hi Nettie! I’m so glad you were able to get that free download on Widow of Gettysburg. You are so right, having to make do really IS inspirational. We have to be all that much more resourceful, do’t we? ๐
Hi Janette! I’m so glad you enjoyed Wedded, and hope you love Widow even more. You will get to catch a glimpse of Charlotte and Caleb, and even Caroline is in there for a brief moment if you pay close attention. ๐ Hope the book leaves you inspired!
I loved Wedded To War, I have read it twice, and can’t wait to get my pre ordered copy of Widow of Gettysburg. Your blog is wonderful and the gift giveaway is just lovely! I look forward to more of your blog!
Good morning, Patty! I believe it. ๐ Jocelyn’s writing is so great. I’m so glad you are here. Welcome!!
Patty, really? You read it twice? Wow, that’s a high compliment, thank you so much. I am so glad you have a copy of Widow about to appear in your ereader! Thanks for coming by, I agree, Joanne’s blog is terrific. One of my favorite author blogs for sure!
The books sound fascinating, and I’m a tea-party lover. I must look into these books.
Hi Sylvia, I love tea as well! I like to collect tea cups but I don’t have room for many! I did buy special ones in Hungary, France, and Mt. Vernon (inspired by a pattern on Martha Washington’s china), and I’ve got some lovely English ones from my grandmother. But anyway, I do hope you look into the books! There’s gobs of info, including book trailers and character sketches here: http://www.heroinesbehindthelines.com. Thanks!
Hi Sylvia! So fun to meet another tea party lover. ๐
Hello here I am knocking on your door. I went to the back door though cause I heard backdoor guest are best ๐ I loved the review and the interview. I have not read any of Jocelyn’s books yet but I sure would love too. Thanks for this nice giveaway.
Blessings
joeym11@frontier.com
Hi Diana! I agree, backdoor guests are best. I love having people over who don’t mind seeing a little mess. ๐ Thanks so much for stopping by, and I do hope you get the chance to read Wedded soon–and then on to Widow! ๐ Hopefully you have an ereader so you can get a copy of Widow of Gettysburg free this week!
Backdoor guests ARE best, Diana! So glad you are here for the review and giveaway! P.s. I just shipped your book this morning, so you should get it soon ๐
I haven’t ever heard of Jocelyn Green – I’m so excited to find another historical author! Thank you so much for the giveaway and free pre-order ๐ I also tweeted, Facebooked and pinned!
Joanne, I really truly cannot wait to read Gideon and Lonnie’s future… please hurry! ๐
Hi Mallen, it’s a pleasure to meet you, too! I LOVE history, so much so that I include a bibliography in the back of each of my novels, as well as a section called “The History Behind the Story” to explain what is fact and what is fiction in the novel. You can see lots more about the Civil War novels (including photos from the time period)here: http://www.heroinesbehindthelines.com.
And I totally agree with you about Joanne’s third book. It can’t get here soon enough! ๐
Mallen,
I’m so glad for this chance for you to meet Jocelyn! And doubly glad you grabbed that book. Thanks for the shares! I’ll put you down for those extra entries ๐ I am SO happy that you’re looking forward to Gideon and Lonnie’s next book. It is almost ready and I hope to have a cover for you all soon, too!
Wow sounds like a great series! Can’t wait to read them!!! And share them with my mom and sisters! Love learning about new authors (well new to me:)
Hi Lisa, I love that you love learning about new authors! I’ve published four nonfiction books, a devotional Bible, and now two novels, but in the fiction world, I still feel new. ๐ I’d love to get to know you better. You’re welcome to drop by my Web site at http://www.jocelyngreen.com any time, or find me on FB- facebook.com/jocelyngreenauthor. Thanks for your interest!
Welcome, Lisa! I’m so glad you discovered these books and I so hope you enjoy the series! ๐
Wow that would be awesome to win.
Glad you’re here, Bonnie! ๐
I totally agree! Good luck in the drawing, Bonnie, and thanks for coming by!
I now have more books on my “to be read” list! Jocelyn, thank you for writing about an era that is generally ignored by publishers. I was a history major in college and because I lived 45 minutes from Gettysburg, I spent a lot of my free time there. I plan on taking my kids out there sometime in June or July, as it will be the 150th anniversary of the battle.
Oh! Oh! (Can you see me jumping up and down over here?) I have a great idea, Sandy, come to Gettysburg on Saturday, June 29!! I’ll be at the brand new Seminary Ridge Museum (in the historic seminary building pictured on the cover of my novel) for a book signing from 1-4 pm!! I would love to meet you and sign a book for you! I’ll be giving a 20 minute presentation on the civilian experience at Gettysburg at some point that weekend, just not sure when. So man! It would be fun to see you! ๐ And anyone else reading this! ๐
Sandy, it sounds like these books are just right up your alley! I agree, it’s such an important part of our history and it’s great how she brought it to life through this series. So glad you are entered! (Jocelyn…I think you may have found a kindred spirit!) ๐
I just ordered Widow of Gettysburg for my Kindle to PC. ๐ Looking forward to reading it even though I’ve not read the first book… ๐ and Joanne, I just got Though My Heart is Torn in the mail the other day – ordered it with birthday money. Hope to read it soon, but have some review copies to finish first!
Hi Pam, it sounds like you are an avid reader! How wonderful. Even if you don’t read Wedded to War, you will still enjoy Widow of Gettysburg. It can be read as a stand-alone. And you are in for a treat with Joanne’s new book, too! Adored it. I went hungry for hours so I could just stay glued to the pages. ๐
Aww, thanks Jocelyn! ๐
I agree, Pamela, I think you will really enjoy Widow of Gettysburg! I’m so glad you just got Though My Heart is Torn! Hooray! I so hope you enjoy it and happy belated birthday! ๐
Thank you for the chance to win this book. I enjoy historical books. I also shared on twitter.

Andrea
I just love that you’ve heard beautiful things about Jocelyn’s book. It truly is such a moving read. I’m so glad you’re entered and thanks for those shares! I’ll mark you down. ๐
Thanks, Joanne! I ordered her new book on my kindle (my pocketbook is glad it was free!) and I’m looking forward to reading it.

Andrea, your name is starting to look familiar–I’ve probably seen you on other blogs, yes? Thanks for entering, and I hope you get a chance to start this series soon!
Jocelyn, yes, I’ve posted on several other blogs lately, particularly Beth Vogt’s. I’m not sure which one you’ve seen me on, but I appreciate you noticing me. ๐ Also, I’ve got my own blog going these days. I’d love it if you’d stop by sometime.
http://writingtoinspire.blogspot.com
And, I’m really looking forward to reading your series of books. They sound very fascinating.
I have Wedded to War on my nook and plan to start it today. I actually have Widow of Gettysbury pre-ordered also. I’m looking forward to reading the series. Thanks for making these books available so we can add another good Christian writer to our list.

TODAY? It took THAT long to get to you? Oy! Media mail! Oh well! Glad it’s in your hands now! ๐
Thanks for the chance to win one of Jocelyn’s books. I have not had the pleasure of reading one of her novels yet. I shared the giveaway on FB.

Melissa, that is the perfect way to enjoy Wedded to War! Charlotte Waverly, the heroine, prefers orange spice tea. Her sister Alice’s favorite is raspberry. But you’ll find all of that and much more out soon. ๐ Delighted to meet you here.
I’m so glad, Melissa! Jocelyn is my kind of writer– so full of truth and realness ๐ Oh yummy…enjoy your tea! ๐ Thanks so much for sharing, too. I’ll enter you twice!

bonnieroof60@yahoo.com
So glad to hear it, Bonnie! ๐
Have not read any of your books, so would be a treat to do so.
Martha, you are most definitely in for a treat. ๐
I would love to be able to add a new author to my list of read books. I am always fascinated by a good Civil War story.
So am I, Cherie! ๐ By the way, if you also enjoy nonfiction, I’ll let you know that my Heroines Behind the Lines series was inspired by research I did for my book Stories of Faith and Courage from the Home Front, which is a 365-day collection of inspiring stories from women on the home front during America’s wars. I spent eight weeks talling stories from the Civil War. SO much fascinating history!
Thanks for entering the drawing!
Good afternoon, Cherie. ๐ I’m so glad you’ve found Jocelyn and her books!
What a unique giveaway! I was thrilled to grab Widow of Gettysburg for my Kindle for free. But I can’t wait to get to Wedded to War first (gotta read in order). Thanks for the chance to win this tea-inspired giveaway!
Beth
I posted on Facebook-
https://www.facebook.com/groups/200067670053172/permalink/505701509489785/
Hi Beth, yes, reading them in order is the best way to go! I think lots of people have the same idea because Wedded to War (paperback) is sold out on Amazon right now! So glad you were able to get a free copy of Widow. Enjoy them both!
Thanks so much for stopping in and commenting, Beth! I’m so glad you’re looking forward to these books. Thanks for sharing, too! I’ll be sure to enter you twice. ๐
I was able to select a free copy of Wedded to War a while back, but when I tried to open it yesterday, it would not download. I am so disappointed. I do have the sampler and can read it, but that is just such a teaser! I also have Widow, but I wanted to read Wedded first as you suggest. Any suggestions? I will share about this giveaway on FB now. Thank you so much.
Hi Phyllis, that’s terrible! I would go to whichever retailer you got the free copy of Wedded to War from and tell them the copy you have is faulty. They should have the record of your original download and I would hope they’d let you download it again. Yikes! I hope that situation resolves quickly for you! The sampler is not enough!
Phyllis, So sorry to hear about that. I think Jocelyn’s advice sounds like a great idea. I hope it works out for you too! Thanks so much for sharing! I’ll put you down for an extra entry. I hope you’re having a great day!
Phyllis, I just saw that BN.com is offering Wedded to War FREE as a Nook book right now!
I received the book as a birthday present and can’t wait to have time this summer in the sun to read it. I shared your link on facebook. Thanks for the giveaway.
Lori – what a relaxing time to read. I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for the share! I’ll make a note for the entries. ๐
Hi Lori, summer is right around the corner, and a perfect time to read Wedded to War since much of the story takes place during the summers of 1861 and 1862. As part of my research I went to the Virginia Peninsula in June to feel just how hot those nurses and soldiers must have felt. When you get a chance to read it, I do hope you enjoy it!
Joanne, I love Jocelyn Green. She is such a sweet person. She is a great supporter of military wives. Even has a blog where she ministries to them. Faith Deployed for Military Wives. She has several family traditions and has had them quite awhile. Friday is Family movie night. Saturday mornings she and her husband watch Rick Steves, one of there favorite things to do together. And, she loves RED. She lives in Iowa. I would love to win this special gift package. Thanks! Maxie mac262(at)me(dot)com
Maxie,
Your comment is so sweet. I just love hearing all these great things about Jocelyn. What a wonderful ministry she has both as a writer and as a wife and mom! Thanks for being here for the giveaway!
Hi Maxie! You get an A+ for knowing your Jocelyn Green trivia! ๐ Just thought of another family tradition that I’m actually doing right now- on Wednesday afternoons I bring my kids over to my parents house so they can have some bonding time. My son is playing trains with Grandpa and my daughter is doing a puzzle right now with Grandma. ๐ Soon I’ll have to pack them up to go home and they will all be sad. We look forward to it every week.
Thanks so much for being here Maxie!
Thank you for the chance to win this gift package.

My pleasure, Wendy! Thanks for stopping by!
I have such respect for Jocelyn and what she is doing for military wives and family, not to mention the fact that she is bringing the Civil War to life for those of us who love the genre. I’ve been a Civil War afficionado for many years, and I can’t wait to read Jocelyn’s books. Thank you for featuring her and for the fabulous giveaway. What a way to go! I could go for an afternoon of reading and sipping tea without a doubt! Thank you!

How sweet this is! I am with you…just so much respect for Jocelyn and these military wives and families. I am so glad you are looking forward to reading these books. They are so real and authentic that they really transported me as a reader. I hope you enjoy them. Thanks for being here!
Thank you so much! I’m a huge follower of Civil War fiction, and I’m most impressed with Jocelyn’s work.
Nancee, so lovely of you to stop by and keep on supporting me! I’ve been posting a lot of links lately and you keep showing up, and I love that support! What an encourager you are. Good luck in the drawing!
Jocelyn, I’m happy to help support you and promote your books, and to show my encouragement. I feel that all of us who enjoy good books owe some credit to the authors who bring us so much pleasure. A simple thing like “liking” a comment at least recognizes that we have seen your post and enjoyed it. God bless you in your writing!
Thank you so much for this giveaway! I am looking forward to reading this new book. I am really enjoying the books that I have read recently about the history of our nation. Keep the great stories coming!!
You are so very welcome, June! If you get a chance to read this series, Jocelyn’s writing is so wonderful and the setting so real. ๐
Hello June! I LOVE that you enjoy books about the history of our nation. Me too! If you’d like to see some very striking historical photos related to Widow of Gettysburg, head on over to http://www.heroinesbehindthelines.com and click the tab at the top that says “Visuals.” I also have lots of books from my bibliography listed online under “Resources” if you like a little nonfiction to go with your fiction! ๐
I’ve know Jocelyn for years and have truly enjoyed learning about history through her words in Wedded to War. I have Widow preordered and am anxiously waiting for it to arrive. It has been a pleasure meeting you Joanne through Jocelyn and want to start reading your books as well. Good giveaway also!
Good evening, Karen. I just love hearing how you enjoyed Wedded to War. I’m with you, anxiously awaiting the next one, WHICH just arrived in my mailbox today! Pleasure meeting you and I’m so glad you are entered for the giveaway. Thanks so much for your sweet comment!
Hi Karen! So fun to see you here! Hope you are well into your Widow of Gettysburg ebook today! ๐
I haven’t read anything by Jocelyn, but I love novels set during the Civil War, and I love tea – what could be better than this giveaway? ๐
Amanda, this sounds like it will be right up your alley, then! The perfect read to go with a nice cup of tea :]
Hi Amanda! Your comment gave me a big smile. What could be better than this give-away indeed? ๐ Thanks for entering!
What a fun giveaway! Thanks so much for hosting it. I have a lot of work-related non-fiction to read right now in a very short amount of time, but I can’t wait until I can relax a little and read “Widow of Gettysburg.” It was especially nice to get the free Kindle download edition. My sister is Jocelyn’s church friend, so I have the great privilege of saying that I have a personal connection to Jocelyn! My sister just finished her signed copy and loved it. I’m so excited!
Hi Joelle! So lovely to see your name pop up with your sweet comment here today! You and your sister are such an encouragement to me. When are you going to come visit us in Iowa again? ๐
Good afternoon, Joelle! So glad you found the giveway here in honor of Jocelyn’s books. How neat to get to meet a friend of Jocelyn’s! You are in for such a treat with these new books. ๐ So great to see you here!
I love historical fiction. What wonderful gifts….Love a nice cup of tea just like the heroine. THANK YOU, Rhonda
rhonda_nash_hall@comcast.net
Rhonda ~ you and me both! There’s just something about a nice cup of tea. Thanks for being here!
I learned so many things at Jocelynโs website. For one I can access some truly delicious looking recipes.
Cheers!!
marypres(AT)gmail(DOT)com
Hi Mary! Thank you so much for visiting my Web site! So glad you found the recipes–you may have noticed that TWO of them are from Joanne Bischof! In fact, her wonderful recipes are what inspired me to ask authors to keep sending them to me, so I could create a section on my site dedicated to them! Thanks for entering the drawing!
Oh, by the way, come back to my web site later this month, I’ve got more recipes lined up to share with you from a couple other authors! ๐
Most definitely! Jocelyn’s website is so welcoming!
What a lovely giveaway. I took advantage of the free Kindle copy of Widow this morning. It’s locked and loaded on my PC Kindle Reader, and up next as soon as I finish the current read. You’ve really whet my appetite and now I’m looking forward to it even more.
Lori- So glad you grabbed that copy. I think you will enjoy Jocelyn’s style. Very true to life and beautifully researched she and you (and Laura!) are some of my favorite voices. Happy reading!
Joanne, thank you for this oppurtunity ! I have read both books in your Cadence of Grace series and it has been both absolutely beautiful, sweet, heartbreaking and full of inspiration . I have enjoyed the series so much and I can’t wait until the next one !
Rebekah, welcome!! I just saw a new face over on my facebook page and realize it’s YOU! So glad to see you there AND here. What a sweet comment…it just does my heart good to know you are enjoying the series. Thank you! I’m excited to get you the third book, soon!
Joanne, Thanks so much for the free book link! I can’t wait to read it. I enjoyed Though My Heart is Torn so much, and I appreciate your recommendation for the next book in my queue. This is a new genre for me, and I’m so happy to have discovered a new “escape” when I get some mommy-time.
Jocelyn, I laughed when I read your bio on your site, because I can totally relate to so many things you said about yourself. I am also an introvert who finds it easy to speak in public, especially when I’m teaching. I love my pj pants too, and as a homeschooling mom, I stay in them too long each day. I’m also a former military wife, and a navy brat. I bookmarked your Civil War page to refer to when my boys and I study it again. We found out some cool civil war history about our family when researching our genealogy. It is so sad what so many of those involved went through and how their lives were never the same.
Well hello Anne! What a delight to meet you! That’s so fun that you can identify with several of the things I shared about myself. I LOVE my writing pants. AKA pajama pants. AKA couch pants. And here’s one more thing you and I are about to have in common–I’m going to start homeschooling next year! Yay! I’m really excited about it, but a little nervous because I think I have to write two novels next year too. But God will make a way.
I’m so glad to hear you bookmarked my Civil War page to refer to later! I’m guessing that means my Civil War history page on my author Web site–so I’ll let you know that I’ve got lots more good Civil War history over at http://www.heroinesbehindthelines.com. Check the resources tab. One of my hopes is that home educators will find these things useful!
Hope to see you around again, Anne! If you haven’t yet connected with me on FB, I’d love to see you there! facebook.com/jocelyngreenauthor
Good luck in the drawing!
Anne, I see you “liked” my author page last night, thank you so much! ๐
Anne,
I am so glad that you were able to grab that free book! And just so happy to see how much you and Jocelyn have in common. What fun! And how neat it is that you’ll be able to use Jocelyn’s page for studying the Civil War. That is great!
Thank you so much for your sweet words on Though My Heart is Torn. Just thrilled that you enjoyed it!! I hope you have a wonderful weekend. ๐
I can’t wait to read Widow of Gettysburg!! I loved Wedded to War! Chocked full of history!
Oh, I am so with you, Marissa! Wedded was fantastic and I just know Widow is going to be so great! So happy you’re here!
SO happy to announce the winner of the Wedded to War inspired giveaway… Elizabeth Dent!! Congratulations, Elizabeth!! Thank you to everyone who visited with Jocelyn and I. You all are such a blessing!
One of my favorite things about Jocelyn is that her favorite color is red, and where ever she lives, there is always one red room in her house. She is a sweet person. AND, a good author. Maxie mac262(at)me(dot)com
