It’s my joy to spotlight folk music now and again for two reasons.
1. I LOVE folk music. It’s pretty much my favorite genre outside of worship music. And there are some really awesome artists and songs out there…so this is me sharin’ the love :]
2. Folk and bluegrass music really tie into my stories. It’s a common thread in most everything I write. And while it’s ever evolving, this song is one that is currently at the top of my writing mix.
The song for this spotlight is “Flood Waters” by Josh Garrels. Josh is an incredible musician and a believer and the amazing thing, is when he puts out an album, like “Love and War and the Sea In Between”, he shares it for free for the first year. Just as a way to give back. That’s how I discovered his music and I hope you enjoy it too! Check out his website, watch some awesome videos and enjoy incredible, God-honoring music. So without further adieu…

I don’t like the “bluegrass” music my grandparents listen to, but Josh Garrels is pretty good! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Gwendolyn, it’s my pleasure! I agree, Josh has a nice, modern style that really adds something new to folk music. There are so many great Indy folk musicians out there, I have to resist the urge to spotlight one more often, lol.
I really do not listen to this type of music much, but this wasn’t too bad. Still not my type of music, but it certainly fits with your writing. Thanks for sharing. 🙂 I am in a drawing to win an ARC of Though My Heart is Torn, so fingers, arms, legs, toes and eyes crossed! 🙂
Debbie, glad it wasn’t too bad for you 😉 I enjoy this kind of music as I write. It sort of helps me feel the emotion of a scene or character. Josh Garrels is one of my favorites and I love how he weaves his love of the Lord into his music 🙂 So glad you entered the giveaway for Though My Heart is Torn! I’m so thankful to my publisher for putting that together. 🙂 I hope you have a great day!
I love the dimensionality of his voice, the bridge gave me chills, and the message is superb. Isn’t our God incredible, that He creates a rainbow of talents and styles for us to find exactly which ones touch our individual souls? What may not resonate with one of us may be perfect for another, in books, art, AND music. Thanks for sharing! I’m going to explore Josh’s other songs. God bless!
So well said, Beverly! I love hearing your thoughts and how it spoke to you. I set up a Pandora station of Josh Garrels and it has a great variety of his songs. I couldn’t agree more, about how God created a rainbow of talents in so many mediums. I think that’s what makes the arts so important. Neat how one can feed into another. Glad you enjoyed it, my friend!
Not really my type of music but, everyone has their own type. It looks like it would fit you. Thanks for sharing.. I would like to be entered in the give away of Though My Heart Is Torn. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks.
Understandable, Elizabeth 🙂 I listen to a lot of Folk music while I write and it’s one of my ways to focus. Here is the link for the giveaway. It’s on my publisher’s website: http://form.jotformpro.com/form/30176528679970 I hope you are having a great day!
Such a fresh sound– dynamic, accoustic, rolling… one that warrants multiple listens! Thank you for the introduction to a great new artist– I can’t wait to introduce my hubby to this song!
Amanda, I am so glad you enjoyed it! I have had fun swapping favorite artists with you in the past. Always pull up my Indelible Grace station when I want to spend some music time with God. I hope Ben enjoys it! There are some great songs and he makes a great Pandora station. 🙂
Oooh! I love this guy’s music! I can’t believe I haven’t heard of him before! Thanks for sharing (:
Jenna, I am so glad you’ve discovered him! That’s always my hope, to spread the word about great music. I hope you enjoy more! 🙂
I love how music can bring you into a scene…a feeling, an emotion and setting even. Think of your favorite mix tape (CD?) from high school… instantly, you’re THERE.
I can almost imagine a group of friends, sitting together on a windswept evening as the pines sing their melody in the background. This is a beautiful song. Thank you for sharing an artist worthy of the mountains…
Love ya, sis
Ashley
Ashley,
Yes! I love that too. It truly does, just draws us as writers right into a scene and the emotions we are trying to express. Now what I wouldn’t give for a peek into YOUR writing mix 😉 hint *cough* hint, LOL
Such earthy tones to his voice, you just can’t hide from his true enlightenments, he really is a free spirit worth sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! Agreed…such earthy tones and such a message within. Have a great day! 🙂
Thanks for the spotlight! I really enjoy folk music too! My brother is a Music Minister back home in Kentucky so he is always introducing me to knew faces and talents in the realm of music! I will have to tell him about Flood Waters!! 🙂
Hello Hannah! How fun. I can just imagine the fabulous music you have there in Kentucky. I’m a tiny bit jealous 😉 I hope your brother enjoys it! Josh Garrels has so many great songs.
